I found out what the problem was - I had put the X, Y and Z A4988s one pin to the right (and didn't see that under the LCD plug before turning it on). I destroyed two A4988s and possibly the RAMPS board.

I"ve just wired up my Acrylic Prusa i3 kit, checked the wiring and then turned it on. Instantly the A4988 on the X-axis started to get very hot (and it burned a hole in the chip), so it would seem that the A4988 or the RAMPS board has a short.
