i use cura for slicing and use the same settings every time only thing that changes is the infill amount.
i can try and reload the firmware

that doesn't explain why its retracting the filament at the start

When the mk8 works it does an awesome job, but for the most part it just doesn't want to work like most here mine does the clicking thing but the last 3 days its been retracting the filament at high speed at the start of the job 4 times today :x yesterday was 3 and the day before was 3. it will move ...
