The lcd was still lit and looked operational.. I'll have to play with it to see what's actually broken. There are no burn marks I can see.

sorry if this was answered, but are you using TMC 2208s with those Vref??
i installed a set myself and had to take out the extruder one becuase it was making a bad noise on retraction, I can live with the noise level of the always running extruder much more than x/y..

I tried several times uploading firmware with the board completely disconnected just plugged in via USB..
I was able to get the printer operating again but I'd still like to update the fw at some point

resoldering did nothing. still times out regardless of which usb port i use or cable. etc.
