Mecreator 2 extruder not heating

Mecreator 2, Repetier 1.6.0, first unboxed and tried March 30, 2017

The extruder reads a temp of 0 and stays that way, both through Repetier and front control panel. The bed heating functions normally through software and control panel. The home function appears to be working normally. A test sample was found in the box.

Setup was done according to the online manual, baud rate, etc.

What should I check next, assuming the test print was not a problem, what did I miss?

have you checked to see if the hot end is actually cold?
when you command the hot end do younhave voltage to the hot end heater leads?
is the thermister good?

after trying a number of things, I finally unplugged it, let it sit for 2 days and then tried again and now it seems to be working
