TMC2224 No Firmware Changes Necessary! 12V or 24V

Post by Sneakers »

Ever since I got he A30 I've really been wanting to try out some Trinamic Stepper Motor drivers. The stock Allegro A4988 drivers are good, but very noisy. Also I just just like modding things. :D

Anyway, the TMC2224 drivers from Panucatt are a drop in replacement. No firmware modding or soldering required.

I did have to the change the motor direction using the Smartto Motor Tool. I think most Trinamic drivers require this.
Since I have a 12V system I had to run the driver in StealthChop2. If you have a 24V system you could probably run the driver in the stronger Spreadcycle mode. For me there was a loud whining coming from the motor in Spreadcylce mode with 12V.

To set my Drivers up, I used 1/16 Micro stepping and Stealthchop2 mode by only having the middle jumper on. I used a Vref of 7.5 for X,Y,E. For the Z I used a Vref of 1.1. So far I've had no layer shifts or issues in Stealthchop mode.

Hi.

And are you familiar with the DRV8825 2.5A driver :?:

Comparison of several stepper motor controllers.

The article contains very interesting data and a lot of practical information.
