Mk8 extruder skipping

I finally got my prusa i3 to print. It was terrible to watch but it did work. Mostly.
Regardless of whether the extruder clam bolt is all the wya down up, or anything in the middle. If I get to an infill area the extruder begins to "skip" it stops pushing out filament.
Considering it can in areas that are slower. I'm guessing it is the driver board overheating and not sending enough current? I didnt have the fan for the board hooked up because I didn't have the pinout diagram and was just mostly guessing at everything I did. I know where the fan header is now, but im not sure that will help. my kit didnt come with the thermal adhesive (I looked) So I had to use some vrm thermal adhesive which was quite old. Considering the heat sinks don't get hot I don't think its working.
But before I take it apart, is it possible that it is the extruder driver overheating?
