Temperature Overshoot

I have a Prusa i3 M201 and I am currently using two extruders/heaters. The first heater works appropriately, but the second heater has a very high temperature overshoot, so much so that it damages both the heating element and the sensor (the covers wrapped around the wire have burned off).

I want to check the PID of the first extruder so that I can compare it to the second, but am unsure how. Using this guide has not been successful - I input the appropriate G-code and receive no response from the printer. I have used EasyPrint, Repetier, and Pronterface each to no avail.

I would appreciate guidance or advice on how to solve this temperature overshoot problem. I have already ruined a heating element and am very interested in preserving the rest.

Have you been able to get the PID tune to work on your first hot end?
A quick fix would be to tune hot end 1 and set the new PID into both hot ends.

You can try to apply the PID in the first extruder to the second extruder in order to check the PID in the second extruder working well.

I have tried to tune the PID on the first hot end, but I did not get a response when I input the G-code.
I think that looking into the first hot end's PID and applying it to the second would be the best, however I am stuck at the inputting the G-code.

Is there a way to observe the PID without inputting a G-code command?

On my Pro B you can see and set the PID from the screen.

Press the control knob to get the menu.
scroll down to Control and sellect.
Scrool down to temperature and sellect.
Now you can scroll down to the PID settings and record or change them.
be sure to save your settings or they will reset when you turn the machine off.

The method of tuning PID is similar to ProB's,so you can refer to Newopint95's method.
