Fitting a coupler

I picked up a Geeetech I3 Aluminum in bit and ices and am in the process of putting it together.
From the installation videos on Youtube, the Z steppers should have a short shaft and coupler and then the worm rod.
Is this setup an early version I3 Aluminum?
Do I fit a couple on the top of the shaft?
Any help will be appreciated.
