Had we stayed married, today would be the 13th year. I would’ve been scrambling for a gift last week, done a lot of Googling for what to buy at different years, trying to find something unique. I would’ve hated the whole process. he would’ve gotten me something I’d never use or care about, and I’d need to pretend to love it. Neither of us had liked each other or wanted to stay married, but we both just went through the motions. For years and years.

Celebrations like this were always so empty. It was like we knew we were doing it for the kids to see how happy couple functioned.
