Thanks for replying. It turns out that the black wire is poorly crimped on the connector to the y axis stepper motor. I can move the wire and force to start or stop moving deliberately. Hopefully this will help someone else and save them the time that it takes to find the same problem.

I have a Geeetech I3 pro C which has been assembled and in process of testing. 'I resolved the Z axis issue by uploading the correct firmware that was provided by Geeetech.
