If the firmware doesnt help, try using a different SD card, My pausing problems were caused by an SD that the printer didnt like.

I need to replace the Y axis stepper motor, It has been making a grinding noise that keeps getting louder. Vref is correct, belts and pulleys are all ok The stepper motor itself has a bad bearing or gear inside.

I fixed my pausing issue. One particular SD card I was using would cause the printer to pause at random, it wasnt a firmware or a slicer issue.

The printer shipped with all of the lead screw hub to bracket screws loose. I mistakenly tightened them. Apparently the brackets are not completely straight. I loosened the screws again and the binding issue is gone.

If I use this firmware, must I replace all of the drivers with the tmc2208? or can I just upgrade the X and Y axis drivers?

I also made sure that no wheels are loose or binding, and checked that the beam is level with the rest of the frame using a digital level. I also replaced the stepper screw couplers because they were off-center, causing a wobble.
