managed to use an old cura 15.4.6

on lcd screen on a10 X is flashing x then ? then X then ? same with y and z

Hi, If you use CURA slicing software, you can update the HEX format firmware;
If you use Arduino you can update the firmware in CONFIGURATION_H format.
But what is Cuda?
