I'm also in exactly the same situation - there is also another thread with someone else having this issue. Clearly there is an issue that needs to be sorted by Geetech!

When we try to use the firmware uploaded it won’t it forever times out. Some other searching revealed that the perhaps the board doesn’t have a boot loader installed and that’s why no one can patch the firmware. I’m traveling at the moment, But I’m going to try and install a boot loader and then try and patch it. I’ll document the process if I’m successful and share it with everyone @Erica

Can you describe what you did? (did you hold reset as they suggest, did you have to install a bootloader) ...

Can you describe that in a bit more detail william? At which point do you release the reset button, AFTER you've pressed "Upgrade from Local"?

I'm pretty sure the issue with my printer is that there isn't a bootloader on the board. which is why AVRDude times out constantly. I've seen some videos on how to install a bootloader with a Arduino Uno... @William or someone from Geeetech can we get instructions on how to install a bootloader on this board?

Thanks man, seems like you got lucky and got a bootloader on yours, Mine is getting returned to amazon monday if I don't get any advice on how to fix this --- sad too as this printer has so much potential.
