Skipping steps rostock G2S

I have been working with this printer for a couple weeks, and have it mostly working. One of the biggest problems I am having is that one of my stepper motors (for the X tower) skips steps on occasion. What might cause this to happen?
It is most noticeable when I home the printer and the carriage is traveling up. The carriage will stop moving a vibrate for a few seconds before continuing up. The annoying part is that it will skip a step while printing, and so the print will be ruined.
I have adjusted the voltage up a little using the POTs on the stepper drivers. Can anyone tell me what I should be aiming for as far as voltage between the trim pot and the GND pin?
On another thread someone mentioned that the motors/platform should move easily if I try to move them with the machine powered off. Is this true?
Could my belts be too tight? All 3 towers are tensioned similarly but only the X tower is skipping.
