Replacing the A4988 stepper driver with a more powerful one

Hi,
I would like to upgrade my printer with a more powerful stepper and more powerful driver. I have A4988 drivers installed and would like to change to DQ542MA so that I can use a single 3A NEMA23 stepper on the Z. Is this a straight forward operation? Has anybody done this before?
My plan is to remove the Z driver, make a pin header to replace the driver with, connecting GND, STEP, DIR and ENABLE to the DQ542MA and connect a power supply and the new motor to the new driver. Is that all that has to be done, or is the motherboard dependent on some signals from the A4988 driver?
Please help.
