well, I have my Geeetech A30 since a few days:
- GTM32miniS-Board with four stepper A4988 (I think so)
- Firmware V1.35.56 (smartto ?)
- Using am Mac with macOS 10.12.3 - Cura & micro-SD-Card (without EasyPrint3D-Software)
Great Printer (my first one) - but it is loud...
Can I change the HW-driver to TMC2208 (I've read something about that to an i3 Mega...)?
And "how" - only by switch that hardeware?

Replacement is easy. You take out the modules you have and put new ones in their place.
But ... You have to be careful not to confuse the leads.
Also read about setting the motor current.

You need to update your fw to V1.38.59.
Then replace the motor driver board(Recommend the TMC2208)
You need to invert the dir of the motor also.
Try to refer to the FAQ of the A30.
