Extruder Max Temp Error

Post by Drew »

Hi All,

A short while back I purchased an i3.
The power supplied failed after about 3 weeks, so upgraded to a 24v33A power supply
I changed the heated bed to 24v circuit and replaced the extruder heating bed to 24v also.

However, now whenever i turn on the extruder heater, the temperature just rises, and doesnt stop till Max Temp Error.
The temperature on the computer, temperature log and printer all say the same thing.
When "cold" both the bed and extruder read the same room temperature

Can anyone please help with this error

Thanks in advance

"the extruder heating bed to 24v also"
I think you mean the heating cartridge, right? If so, then you can check the mosfet of the extruder heater, check this link here:

Thanks for your quick reply

Correction:
"I changed the heated bed to 24v circuit and replaced the extruder heating cartridge to 24v also"

When I turn on the extruder heater, the temperature just rises, and doesnt stop till Max Temp Error.
Heat bed OK

Did your link:-
1. Both Bed & Extruder show same value as room temperature

2.1 All 3 green LED on

2.2 2x Red LED, Extruder & Bed (single extruder unit)
Bed light goes out when temperature reached.
Extruder, light goes out, BUT displayed temperature keeps rising to MaxTemp Error.

2.3 Resistance 3.8ohms (new 24v heater)

Updated from Pi3 Pro X to Pi3 Pro C with Dual Extruder.
Swaped Thermistor from Ext 1 to Ext 2
Used heat-bed thermistor in Ext 1 (wouldnt heat otherwise)

The Extruder 2 heated. When temperature reach 220c, RED LED turned off, but display showed still heating up to 260c.
Did not Error on Max Temp
Extruder 2 temperature came down, to 118, the heater turned on again.
Temperature stayed between 118c & 227c

Second test, temperature reached 300c, Max Temp Error
When temperature reach 220c, RED LED turned off, but display showed still heating up

did you check the back of the PCB board? I think there might be some solder bridges, theoretically it can't be like this.

There is no noticable defects with the PCD.
No sign of damage to the components.

Using a multi-metre, the power to the extruder heater does switch off when temperature is reach.
This confirmes that the LED status light is correct.

How can the temperature increase by 100c or more with no power?.
Could this be a software issue ?

This is a new machine, thats only printed about 12 parts.

I'm wondering what's the rated power of your heating cartridge? and the resistance? when you use the 12V power, did this happen before?

It was starting to over temperature before the original power supply blew, with all original equipment.

But I could manually start the heater set to 180c, and turn off at about 200c
I would climb to about 230, and cool down.
I would re-set the temp to 220c, and manually turn on at 215c.

The temperature would climb to about 225, and the stablaise at 220 after a while.
