Problem with yun shield rebooting

I connected my yun shield to my arduino mega for the first time yesterday and connected to the wifi using my pc. I then logged into the yun to change the network settings so it would connect to my home network.

When i change the SSID and Password settings and hit update, the yun saves the new settings but gets stuck when trying to reboot and the progress bar freezes at the end. I have tried a factory reset of the shield before attempting to change the settings again but I'm not having much luck.

I also tried updating the firmware. The new firmware uploaded correctly but the yun freezes again while it's trying to reboot and the progress bar stops at the same point. I assume if i disconnect the shield while trying to update the firmware, damage will occur?

Has anyone any idea how to sort this problem?
