Sanguinololu issues

Post by Splynter »

I'm new to the whole 3D printing experience ( just finished my i3 acrylic build a few days ago ) but looking around the forum, I see I am far from the only one. I also see a fair number of people like me who seem to be having big problems with the whole "firmware", "drivers", "software" issue. The instructions....."drag this to this" etc are vague enough that the not too computer literate types like me, get stumped. Could somebody, anybody, who was successful in their own attempts, please post clear, concise, step by step instructions on how this is done? I can't even seem to find the Sanguinololu board in the option list when I go into the Arduino program tabs!

So far, I have followed the various download instructions, powered on my printer ( green light on power supply ), plugged in the USB cable ( red light on Sanguinololu ) and that is pretty much it. Just cannot seem to get beyond that. And I have tried! Granted, I'm a bit of a techno-deficient ( design and graphics background ), but I've tried just about everything with no success.

I've finally been able to get my board to show up in the list in Arduino. After much trial and error. And only by not following the vague instructions! For example...I had to "copy and paste" the Sanguinololu files. Drag and drop didn't work. Also, instead of extracting all files after downloading Arduino, I simply double clicked. Those two approaches were the only way I could combine the two.

I've looked at that page numerous times but it doesn't really explain the steps involved. For example, the images go from finding and selecting your board in Arduino to suddenly being in Marlin. How do you go from one to the other, yet there is no explanation as to how they are combined / synced......whatever.... ( like Arduino and Sanguinololu )?

Have you ever considered charging extra so the buyer has a "pre-loaded" option available to them? I know I would have taken that route.

Hi
Where exactly does "Marlin" go when compiling the various software / drivers etc? I've gotten to the point where I can find my board, port etc. in Arduino ( but only by copying and pasting Sanguinololu into the Arduino hardware folder....drag and drop doesn't want to work ). I can see Arduino and Sanguinololu in Marlin and input my parameters according to the WIKI page etc. But every time I "verify" in Marlin I get either a "buffer" or "loop" error. I'm missing something, somewhere but I can't seem to find the issue. I've seen a reference in the forum to dragging the Marlin file into Arduino as well, but it doesn't specify where.
Thanks.

Hi
First off, I would suggest doing something to make this forum a little more user friendly. Waiting 24+ hours for a question, or issue to be posted seems counter-productive for those of us making inquiries. And then entire day or more is wasted in waiting for a response, only to have to restate something or ask for clarification.

Now, for the problems at hand. I've followed the directions ( many times now ) and have yet to get even the slightest response from my i3 via my computer. I must be missing a step somewhere but I can't see where. Then to top it all off, last night after successfully ( so Marlin informed me ) uploading to the Sanguinololu, my LCD display went from clear text to solid black blocks! I've downloaded the files according to the links provided. Moved the Sanguin file into Arduino. Found my board and port.....and then that's it. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to progress beyond that. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Before you ask....I have the i3 w/Sanguinololu. I'm running Windows 7 and when powered and plugged in via USB, I have a green light on the power supply and a bright steady red on the board.

What version is you Arduino IDE?
I am sorry for replying so late, because we were on holiday for Qingming Festival.

Hi

Everything I have downloaded is what was recommended on the "firmware" thread.

Still can not upload the firmware? If so, you should drag all the files into Arduino IDE.
The green LED on psu and red LED on mainboard are on, that means psu and mainboard are ok.

So Marlin goes into Arduino as well? I've done that ( dragged into Arduino "hardware" ) and still experience problems even after following all the steps to change the parameters. Fans don't run, steppers work in one direction only. I've seen numerous references to "flashing" but I have no idea how that is done. Or how basic tests can be carried out.
Computers aren't my thing : )

No no no . Not" dragged into Arduino "hardware"". You should drag all the files of sanguinololu's firmware into "Arduino IDE"(Open "arduino.exe"> drag the files of firmware into "arduino.exe">choose correct board type (Tools>Board>sanguino W/ATmega1284p 16mhz) > choose correct COM port(Tools>Serial Port>COM...)).
I want to ask, do you really have firmware for sanguinololu ? Because I did not attach firmware in "firmware" thread.
